Life dates1857-1957BiographyEven though Emily was the eldest daughter of one of the most prominent men in the early colonial settlement of the Western Bay of Plenty, she is best known for the photographs that she took while she was in New Zealand visiting family in 1900. As a woman, her opportunities to make her mark would have been very limited. Wives and mothers lived in the shadow of their husbands and sons and so we are fortunate to have access to her collection of photographs. As far as we know, she not only took them all, she also developed them herself, using dangerous chemicals and methods to achieve success.
Emily Stewart was born in 1857, possibly at Lisbeg House, County Tyrone, Ireland. She arrived in New Zealand on board the Lady Jocelyn in 1878 with her father, George Vesey Stewart; grandparents, Captain Mervyn and Frances Stewart (née Vesey); her Aunt Adela and Uncle Hugh Stewart, their son Mervyn, and various other family members.
She married Richard Surtees in 1879, and they lived at Sandford, their land at Katikati which was given to them by Emily's father George Vesey Stewart when they married. They stayed in Katikati until October of 1885 when they returned to England. Emily came back to Katikati for a visit on her own in 1900 and eventually in 1904 the whole family returned. Richard died at Katikati in 1938, and Emily went to live with her daughter Sophy who was married to Frank Fagan, the grandfather of the Fagan shearers.
