Life dates1853-1938BiographyRichard arrived in New Zealand with his sister Louisa (Lou) aboard the Lady Jocelyn in 1878. It is worth noting that Richard was quite possibly not part of George Vesey Stewart's original 2nd party to the Special Settlement of Katikati, as he did not receive a land grant. However, once he arrived at Katikati, he did not hesitate to involve himself in the community, being elected on to the Katikati Road Board in 1880, the building committee for the church in 1881 as well as participating in various other clubs and committees in the new township.
He married Emily Stewart, whom he had met on the Lady Jocelyn, in on the 12th June 1879. She was the youngest daughter of George Vesey Stewart and was responsible for taking the photographs which have survived intact and are now the property of Emily's granddaughter Elizabeth Smith of Marton, New Zealand.
Following the marriage, George Vesey gave Emily 200 acres of land north of Katikati at Tahawai, on which Rciahrd built the family home of Stanford. The road on which it sat was named after his family and became Surtees Road. It was renamed in 2000 to Hikurangi Road following a request from Mr W. R. Bryan of Tuapiro Marae. Cllr. Sam Dunlop liaised with residents who raised no objection, and the road was renamed.Place of birthHoltby, YorkshireOccupationFarmerPlace of ResidenceSurtees/Hikurangi Road, Katikati
