DescriptionRichard and Emily Surtees were gifted 200 acres of land just outside the township of Katikati by Emily's father, George Vesey Stewart after they married in 1879. They lived there until 1885 when the whole family sailed back to England, where they lived for the next 20 years. Emily must have developed an interest in photography while she was back in the UK, because when she returned to visit family in New Zealand, she not only took all the photographs which are in this collection, she also developed them herself. We are privileged to show you the collection here in digitised form.
Elizabeth Smith is now the custodian of this album and the original photographs in it. Emily had six children, the youngest of whom was Elizabeth Evelyn Surtees. She married Jocelyn Dashwood Smith in 1921. Elizabeth is the daughter of that union and resides in Marton.
