He eventually bought his father-in-law's runoff farm in Thompson's Track but moved to Katikati after breaking his leg. He became intersted in history in the 1960s and began to write, and in 1979 produced "Hours of Minutes: the inside story of schooling in Katikati through its first century 1877-1977."
