TitleWestern Bay Museum
DescriptionKatikati has had a museum since Easter of 2000, when Nancy Merriman opened the Katikati Heritage Museum on the corner of Wharawhara Road and State Highway 2. She managed this museum until it was closed in 2014 and taken over by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council. After much discussion and controversy, Councillor Mike Williams was appointed as Chairman of the Katikati Heritage Museum Trust with trustees Brendan Gibbs, Bruce McCutcheon and Kevin Taylor, with Kate Williams as Trust Secretary. Paula Gaelic was recruited as the manager of the museum collection. She was instrumental in cataloging and organising the collection which she had inherited from Nancy. The newly named Western Bay Museum re-located to the recently vacated Katikati Fire Station after the volunteer fire brigade moved to its new premises on the corner of Sheffield Street and Middlebrook Road, and opened its doors in November 2015 with its inaugural exhibition, "Unexpected Heroes".
