Place Details
DescriptionAthenree as a name came about after Captain Hugh Stewart and his wife Adela decided to build their homestead on their allotted land and name it after the district of Athenree in County Tyrone, Ireland, which they had left behind. The name eventually lent itself to the village situated along the inlet.
Naturally, there were previous inhabitants. It is said that there were people living on the very land that Athenree Homestead stands on now, but that their home or homes were simply demolished when the Homestead was built. In fact, clear archaeological evidence of kumera storage pits was found and reported on in 2013.
Athenree is now known as relaxing holiday destination, and is also becoming an increasingly attractive place to live. Conveniently located between Katikati and Waihi, it also has the beautiful beach at Waihi Beach on its doorstep.
