DescriptionFrom earliest times, this forgiving stretch of sand with its temperate, gentle climate and plentiful food supply has been a desirable location for settlement. It was fought over by a number of iwi, including Ngai te Rangi. More recently, George Vesey Stewart purchased extensive parts of the land at Waihi Beach, and the area was settled by Pakeha farmers.
Waihi Beach has become an iconic holiday and Summer retreat, particularly for Aucklanders. The population of Waihi Beach, usually around 3,000, swells to around 17,000 during the Summer months, as city dwellers escape the "Big Smoke". GeoTag[1]
