DescriptionSt Peter's is the oldest church in Katikati and indeed one of only two original pioneer churches in the Bay of Plenty, the other being St Thomas' Anglican Church at Maketu. The interior is built from locally milled kauri. It has one of Katikati's distinctive murals on one of its walls. The foundation stone laying ceremony was held in April 1883 on the land which was donated by Sandy Turner.
The church itself was not completed until December of that year. The building contractor, local businessman William John Gray had not been paid, and the Bishop of Waiapu who was to consecrate the building was locked out until that situation had been remedied. Much to the embarrassment of the Church, the consecration ceremony had to be conducted at No 2 School, across the road from the church where Katikati Primary School is now located.
