BiographyArthur accompanied his father Samuel and his two brothers Sidney and Harry to New Zealand in 1858. Upon arrival, Samuel successfully petitioned for land and received 246 acres at Mangawai on the east coast. Samuel was never able to enjoy this land, as he died before he could occupy it, in 1858. The brothers took it up and when Arthur left to become a full time soldier in 1864, his younger brother Harry continued living on the property.
Arthur purchased a 53 acre block of land at Matua, in Tauranga in 1874 and when he was on leave in 1877, he returned to Tauranga and sought out the company of his then friend, Elizabeth Winspear, the adopted daughter of the Reverend Joseph Gellibrand. The relationship between Arthur and Elizabeth blossomed into love, and they married in 1878 after being separated for a year while Arthur fulfilled his term of service. Arthur and Elizabeth moved to Omokoroa, close to his great friend the Reverend Gellibrand. In 1880, Gellibrand sold his land to Arthur and returned to Hobart for a time before once again traveling to Omokoroa, where he died. Arthur and Elizabeth took over Gellibrand's property and lived and worked there until Arthur's death at the ripe old age of 85, in 1928.
