GELLIBRAND Joseph Tice (Rev.). Western Bay of Plenty Community Archives, accessed 20/04/2026, https://westernbay.recollect.co.nz/nodes/view/1078
BiographyOmokoroa's first European settler, originally came from Tasmania. He sailed to New Zealand in 1874 to look for a new home and new opportunities. He had served for 21 years as a missionary for the Church of England in Tasmania and his tendency to overwork and over strain himself had taken its toll. He and his family traveled to New Zealand in 1876, and the Reverend Gellibrand acquired land on the Omokoroa Peninsula and settled there in 1877. To commemorate his achievement and contribution to the history of European settlement in Omokoroa, a statue of Reverend Gellibrand was made and placed in the Crapp Reserve on the Omokoroa Peninsula. The sculptor was Warwick Lilley of Rotorua. It was unveiled 25th Marrch, 2012.
