DescriptionThe naming of this waterway is something of a local legend - Ure in Maori is the male penis, and Tara is point, or peak. The name may well indicate the importance of the river to the local population - it has certainly played an enormous part in the growth and economic wealth of Katikati, as a highway for barges delivering goods and supplies to the fledgling settlement. It is still a much loved and cared for part of the town of Katikati, with its popular swimming places and coveted white baiting spots. But the question remains - is it called the Uretara River, or is it a stream?
