She never married, choosing to qualify as a schoolteacher who became a much loved and respected educator. Pat enjoyed an adventure, as she left her homeland in 1956 to embark on a long trip abroad to Europe which she meticulously recorded in several photograph albums and a full trip diary. She eventually moved to Ōmokoroa, where her parents had met many years before.
