DescriptionKatikati Drama Club in the 1960s and 70s was an active and successful club which produced a number of well-reviewed plays and pantomimes which were performed at Katikati Memorial Hall. Fortunately, these performances were well documented and recorded and kept in a series of scrapbooks and photo albums which were donated to the Western Bay Community Archives by Ann Allen who enjoyed some stardom as part of the club.
This was the club's second pantomime after "Once Upon a Chime" and was the major production for 1968. The producer was Judith McCulloch who was no stranger to theatre. Her own mother was a well-known producer and Judy was a trained commercial artist. Auditions were initially held in August of 1968 and once the characters were decided, work began in earnest. The traditional tale was re-created as a raucous, fun-filled Christmas pantomime and was a huge success for the club. It was performed to a total audience of 1200 in Katikati (virtually the entire community in those days) over 4 nights; December 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th and it was even taken to Tauranga and performed there as well.
Pantomime is a is a type of musical comedy stage production designed for family entertainment. It was originally developed in England and the annual "Christmas Panto" became a tradition which spread throughout the Commonwealth.
