NameNathaniel DickeyLife dates1849-1928BiographyNathaniel came to New Zealand with his parents Samuel and Nancy Dickey aboard The Empress, arriving in Auckland in May 1865. The family initially lived in Waitakerei, Auckland, before moving to Waiuku. He and his brother James Spence Dickey then went to the Thames goldfields in 1874, where they worked as carters for six years. Nathaniel then moved to Paeroa, where he was one of the first settlers. He operated as a carrier, transporting machinery and batteries for the local mines. Nathaniel and his family later moved to Tauranga. Two of Nathaniel's brothers, James Spence and Robert, and his sister Jane married and settled in Te Puke. One of his sons, Samuel, took up land in Aongatete near Katikati with his family in 1905 and was active in the community, being selected for the Road Board in 1907 and elected to the No. 3 School Committee in 1909. Tragically, three of Nathaniel and Isabella's sons died in the Influenza Epidemic of 1918. Samuel died in Waihi, and Robert Victor and Roy Nathaniel died in Dargaville, all within days of each other in November 1918.Place of birthAhoghill, Co Antrim, IrelandOccupationCarterPlace of ResidenceThames, Paeroa, Tauranga
