BiographyJim's first contact with kiwifruit came when he and his wife Molly were looking for alternative ways to make orcharding more profitable on their No. 3 Road property, and they were put in touch with Te Puke man Vic Bayliss who was experimenting with growing chinese gooseberries, as they were called. Originally brought from China to New Zealand by Whanganui Girl's College principal Mary Isabel Fraser in the form of seeds in 1904, the name originated when they were first grown and tasted in New Zealand, and thought to taste like gooseberries. The Chinese called them monkey peaches.
