Ken Salt collection
Collection Details
DescriptionKen was quite an inventive man - these photographs and drawings were found in his workshop by Roy Robinson after Ken died, and Roy has kept them ever since. An undated article in the Katikati Advertiser tells us of an onion puller which Ken adapted from a potato digging machine. The drawings and photographs in this collection may well be part of a project which was being worked on by this very resourceful and clever man.
Ken was the son of Joseph and Agnes Salt (nee Buchanan), and Joseph was the son of James, who arrived in New Zealand in 1865 with his wife Elizabeth (nee McBride).
Christine Brunt (nee Taylor) has added some memories of Ken and his workshop:"When Ken first set up in business (as "Ken Salt. General Engineer") it was in a new building that looked like a concrete double garage. It was built by Ivan Boyles who was setting up on his own as a motor mechanic. Ken had one side of the building and Ivan the other. It was situated where the Four Square carpark is now, by the bus shelter. When their business expanded, Ivan built a service station and workshop on the corner of Main Street and Jocelyn Street, which is now a liquor store....Ken moved right across the road from Ivan, in Jocelyn Street."
Christine's brother Garry was apprenticed to Ivan and his twin and Christine's other brother Kevin was apprenticed to Ken. The boys would meet up for lunch. One day when Kevin went across to meet Garry, Ivan ripped into him ,thinking that Kevin was Garry. Ivan wasn't letting "Garry" go to lunch before he had finished the job he was doing. It was mistaken identity, and Kevin replied "I don't work here", and went to lunch!
