Map Description NZMS13-WD-Index 2022: "The primary research map necessary to find property-plan drawing numbers for Westland to 1990".
Metric and most imperial plan numbers are on local council map databases.
This map has an index for imperial cadastral index maps available over the internet leading researchers to the 4"/mile high-detail block maps that record all the survey plan numbers needed to research properties and districts back to the 1860s. The old-style block maps include topographic information such as tracks, trails, bush cover, buildings &etc.
The 1"/mile cadastral index maps for Westland belong to the NZMS13 series. They are each identified by the Westland abbreviation WD, with the district number added, e.g. Abbey Rock's district number is fifty making its map number WD50 - adding this code to NZMS13 creates the map catalogue number NZMS13 WD50. The map can be located on internet sites using the search words 'map abbey rocks survey district' or by its precise catalogue number NZMS13WD50. The LINZ abbreviation for Westland is now revised to WS.
One-third of the high-detail block-map series are with LINZ, immediately available (if identified) over the internet as digital colour photo images. Two-thirds are at ArchivesNZ - fully described, but very few are photographed. Indexes are in preparation for the LINZ SO block maps covering South Auckland and Taranaki. The block maps generally fit into three eras - from 1870 (most fell to bits), the 1920s, and a 1950-1990 period.
The modified downloadable map listed here has corrected spelling for some survey districts, tweaked boundaries (but nothing is perfect), a few red overprint numbers made more readable, and an interpretation panel pasted in.
The map's catalogue name has the modification year added to differentiate it from official issues.
