Map Details
Map Description The chart was originally published in 1903, prepared from the survey and soundings taken by HMS Penguin voyages 1901-1902. In foul weather, the ship would shelter at Pilot Bay, Mount Maunganui. This copy is the 1921 issue - charts were constantly updated by ship's masters reporting new information, however minor, to the Admiralty in London. This chart joins Chart 3436 at Plate Island.
Prior to each survey, the ship surveyors would first install a reference datum point on the shore, in this case, it is a mark was at the Pilot Bay stone jetty and at Miner's Head, Ongare. When off the coast they would also take regular seabed surface samples and record their findings with the chart sounding - for example, if they found stones, the abbreviation 'st' is written beneath the depth in fathoms - a list of abbreviations is in the title block of this chart.
