DescriptionBoth of these items were donated by Mrs. C.S. Prowse. The telescope belonged to Thomas and Anna Hingston. Thomas and Anna, along with their two children Fred and Edith, and Thomas' mother and sister, left the UK for a new life in New Zealand aboard the Oxford in 1880. Thomas possibly purchased this telescope for that voyage. they arrived in Auckland in 1881 and after crossing oceans and risking everything to get here, Thomas tragically lost his life in 1891 when he drowned in the Waihi Creek near Maketu after developing cramp. Anna and the two children continued to run the farm, and Anna eventually died in 1935. She is buried at the Te Puke cemetery.
