DescriptionAlso called Ford's Cut or the Twin Cut, the Kaituna River District Board made two parallel cuts through land leased by the Ford family at the time. The river had broken out directly to sea naturally at Te Tumu in 1907, which meant that there was no longer any water coming into the estuary. This twin cut was formed to divert water from the river back into the estuary. However by this time the river itself had naturally returned to the estuary via Papahikahawai channel. This extra flow resulted in severe flooding to the surrounding land and the Cut was eventually blocked off in 1956.
