DescriptionTe Puke No. 1 School opened its doors in September 1883. Up until that time, some children were being homeschooled, and some were attending Miss Witherow's private school. It was decided at a meeting held on August 6th 1881 that a school was needed locally, but the scattered nature of the district meant that there was a dispute over where the school should be situated. It was the Inspector of Schools, Mr. R. J. Sullivan, who decided where it should go. Mr. Walker Sullivan was the inaugural headmaster.
