DescriptionThe Lions Club of Katikati is located within Lions District 202-L and were chartered in May 1971. The Pakeke (meaning "elders" in Maori) Lions were chartered in 1983 and catered to members 55 years and over until they went into recess in 2020.
The clubs have had a major impact on the community of Katikati. Members have been very active in fundraising substantial amounts of money for a wide variety of causes. They hold regular fundraising events such as the annual Steptoe's Auction and the monthly Moggie's Market and have also taken part in or led one off projects. These include the building of a bunkhouse at the Aongatete Lodge, the installation of the pedestrian bridge alongside the concrete bridge across the Uretara River and the construction of the Lindemann Lookout. A branch of a Pakeke Lion's initiative, Menzshed, is very active in the Katikati community and more recently, the Pakeke Lions have also installed an outside gym in Diggelmann Park.
Katikati's local phone book is a very useful resource not just for tracking local phone numbers but also for finding details of local clubs, societies, JPs and much more. It is another Lions initiative which benefits the local community.
The Lions have also achieved some very significant milestones in collaboration with other organisations and other Lions Clubs - most notably the successful fundraising efforts which resulted in the new Cancer Lodge built on the site of the old Braemar Hospital in Hamilton.
