Carisbrook Bible Church
Organisation Details
DescriptionBuilt in 1950-51, this is the place of worship which represents the Open Brethren. The Open Brethren, sometimes called Christian Brethren, are a group of Evangelical Christian churches that arose in the late 1820s as part of the Assembly Movement. They originated in Ireland.
The Open Brethren form independent, autonomous assemblies and the name "Open" is given to them to distinguish them from "Exclusive Brethren".
John Duncan Forno, the son of an Italian father and a Scottish mother and a saddler by trade, arrived in Katikati in 1929 with his wife Jane, and their residence soon became the regular meeting place for fellow Christian Brethren. Both John and Jane spent the rest of their lives in Katikati and are buried at Katikati Cemetery. They remained active in the activities of the Assembly even though the Bible Chapel itself was not built until 1951. The present building came about as a result of major alterations done in 1985 and is a central place of worship particularly for the Pacific Island community in Katikati, who give great pleasure to the residents of the nearby homes with their beautiful singing.
