DescriptionGeorge Vesey Stewart's Special Settlement at Katikati was made up of Orangemen from Ulster in Northern Ireland, who were committed Protestants. Indeed, the first Catholic place of worship was not built until 1953, and even then there was talk in the town that it would be burnt down! Happily, this did not happen and the first St. Pius X church in Fairview Road flourished, so much so that a new larger church had to be built on Beach Road, which was completed in 2010. The Catholic community continues to be very active in Katikati, and happily, relations between the faiths are more harmonious than they once were.
The Archive Room at Katikati has a considerable amount of information on the Church's activities in the community.
