DescriptionPonga is a type of tree fern, and awa is the word for bitter. The Pongakawa Stream runs past Pukehina and Pongakawa to Old Coach Road. The first Pakeha settlers came to Pongakawa in the late 1880s, disillusioned by the depression in the cities. Being townsfolk, however, they found it almost impossible to gain a toehold on this wild land, and mnay of them returned to the city. The few who persisted formed the basis of the farming community which exists today.
