He travelled widely across the area about which he wrote and formed many close friendships with those who shared their histories with him. He was awarded the Elsdon Best Memorial Medal for this book by the Polynesian Society when it was first published in 1967, then was also awarded an MBE in 1980, and a CBE in 1992. Life dates1927-2010
